Aircraft aficionados will be pleased to learn that the Manitoba Airshow is returning to Southport near Portage la Prairie on July 7 and 8.
Southport and KF Aerospace are partnering to host the event at Southport Airport. It will feature aerial performances, static aircraft displays and ground-level entertainment suitable for all ages.
"An airshow is a spectacular celebration of aviation excellence that brings excitement and enthusiasm to the community. Southport has a long history of supporting and hosting airshows and would like to see them stay a beloved tradition in Manitoba," May said in an email message.
KF Aerospace, formerly Kelowna Flightcraft, is an aircraft maintenance engineering company that has one of its three main bases at Southport.
May said the show’s highlights include the CF Snowbirds, the Skyhawks that are Canada’s only military parachute demonstration team, and other military and civilian acts. Manitoba’s only air show pilot Dan Reeves will show off his aerial manoeuvres in a Super Decathlon. Guests can also explore static aircraft displays, visit the kid’s zone, try one of the food vendors on site or enjoy a local craft beer.
She noted that the airshow is being held on the same weekend as the annual Portage Exhibition, and believes that the show will benefit the local economy.
In order to prevent traffic problems that plagued the last airshow at Southport in 2016, May said a comprehensive traffic and parking plan has been developed in cooperation with the EM of Portage la Prairie, RCMP and Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation. This includes multiple access roads into the site, several gates into the event and ample parking.
"The event is taking place on two days, which will reduce the number of people in attendance each day," May said.
